Circles and Summer Bucket Lists

Happy Friday!  We had a lot of fun with our Circles books this week!  We started adding staff, community helpers and strangers to our final pages.  I spent a lot of time talking to the kids about different scenarios that might present themselves with community helpers and strangers.  We talked about not helping people find lost pets, taking candy or going anywhere with unfamiliar adults.  We also talked about how important it is to know your personal information (parents' names, phone numbers, address, etc.)  There are still a surprising number of children that need to practice this information.  If your child can't answer these questions, please spend the time to make sure they know!
Although we worked on our Circles books for a few days, we also took some time to make a summer bucket list of things that the kids want to do over the summer.  Hang on to these when they come home (5th graders brought them home yesterday, 4th grade will probably bring them home next week) so that when the summer boredom blues hit, you have some ideas that they have generated.
On Friday, we played some games and enjoyed sharpening our saw together.
As the school year begins to wrap up, our schedules will become less predictable.  I will be planning activities for social skills, but often the classroom teachers' schedules change to fit in last minute things.  My job is to help the kids roll with this and participate in as many things as they are able.  As a result, we may not cover as much as we typically do in social skills the last few weeks.  That's all part of the end of the year roller coaster!  Stay tuned!

Happy Memorial Day weekend families!
I hope you had a great week!  We were busy here!  On Monday, the children began working on their projects for Father's Day.  On Tuesday, we read a book called Don't Rant and Rave on a Wednesday.  It's a book about anger and dealing with it appropriately.  On Thursday, we had game day (we moved it up a day due to my absence).  On Friday, we spent time cutting out pictures of our family and working on our Circles book.
As a reminder, homework folders are done and should be turned in for the final time.  Students can continue working on incomplete homework for the rest of the year, but in lieu of homework, I've asked the children to spend 20-30 minutes reading each night (the standard of time that has been expected all year) and spend 30-40 minutes playing outside (or electronic free if the weather is bad) each night.  As we finish the year and assess like crazy, it's important to balance the business of learning with the business of childhood which is imaginative play!
The joke of the week:
"What is a chalkboard's favorite drink?
Hot chalk-olate!"  Thanks for that gem Mrs. Szalay!
And now, I leave with you a photo from last weekend!

Happy Mother's Day to all of you Moms!  I hope you had a great weekend!  It's was a beautiful few days to enjoy some time outside!
We had a SUPER busy week this week!  On Monday, we continued working on our Circles flip book.  We wrote in names and discussed each group.  We also began working on a special Mother's Day gift for you!  Tuesday found us writing and working on Mother's Day essays.  On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, I was at fifth grade camp with the fifth graders.  We had beautiful weather and a wonderful time!  The other children were in the very capable hands of our amazing support staff and a favorite guest teacher.  They continued working on their essays and thinking about everything moms do for us.
Please remember that I need photos of your child's family and friends for our Circles booklet that we are starting this week.
Joke of the week:  "Where do you tigers swim?
In the kitty pool!"

Hi Families,
Happy Friday!  We had a busy week here!  On Monday, the children practiced their personal information.  They wrote their phone numbers and addresses.  I was surprised at how many children did not know their important information.  We will continue practicing, but please make sure you practice at home.  The first step in the Circles program is to make sure you keep yourself safe, which includes knowing your personal info!
On Tuesday, we addressed envelopes to ourselves (expect some mail).  We also began talking about our Circles program--a curriculum that address personal relationships and safe boundaries.  We will spend a lot of time on this because it is so important for our kids to know to keep themselves safe as they age and form new relationships.  On Thursday, we addressed even more envelopes.  We began coloring the circles that we are eventually turning into a flip book.  The picture at the top of this blog shows an example.

I also wanted to remind you that next week is a strange week for upper el.  There is no school on Tuesday due to the election.  Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, there will be a guest teacher for me as I will be with the fifth graders at Camp Ohiyesah.  (Homework folders are due in TWO weeks).

The week after next, we will be creating a Circles book with photos of our family and friends.  This visual really helps kids understand that different relationships and boundaries.  Please send in some photos that you don't need back (copies are fine) of family, extended family and close friends (both adults and kids) that we can use for this book.  These photos need to be in by MONDAY, MAY 11.  Thanks!
Joke of the week: "Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Interrupting pirate?
Interrupting pirate who?
Arrrrr!"
