What a busy week! The first graders went on a field trip to the Health Exploration Station in Canton! Friday morning we had some sensory and went to my room to look at pictures on the website. The kids were anxious and excited looking to explore the giant body parts. They did a nice job sitting through the classroom presentation in the hospital before climbing in and out of organs! Mrs. Wolff and Mrs. Wehming were very proud of the kids. I stayed back with kindergarten and second grade. In kindergarten we worked at centers with peers and then did some Cat in the Hat math and writing. My second graders and I watched this read aloud of "My Mouth is a Volcano" even though some had already heard the story. The neat part of this video is the principal reading it provides some turn and talk moments that we paused the iPad and did on our own. They talked about whether they agreed with each other or not! It was great and is not a great model you can see how teachers might stop a read aloud or lesson and do "turn and talk" this is happening K-5 to work on speaking and listening skills. This is a great skill you can reinforce at home while you are reading. Stop at each page, or every few and ask questions about how and what the characters are feeling, thinking, and doing. Whew! That was only Friday!
In social skills the kids did a lot of Dr. Seuss activities and we read the books, "Cat in the Hat", "Hop on Pop" to practice rhyming and talk about how the author gives silly illustrations and concepts throughout his writing. We talked about how the words do not always follow the same spelling patterns like -op and -op endings. Sometimes the endings are things like too and blue. They do not look the same but sound the same. We talked about how to chase out the cat in the hat if he came to our home! We read "Green Eggs and Ham" and again talked about rhyming words and word patterns. We started to talk about how we need to use a social filter by using our thought bubble. I decided to push this topic back so we could participate in the Dr. Seuss fun for Read Across America.
The last little bit I need to share is about Mrs. Reece. Her doctor has placed her on bedrest effective immediately, so we are working on getting a long term sub in for her. This is earlier than she would have liked, but needs to do what is best for her health and the health of her baby boy. I will have some additional responsibilities to make sure things are running smoothly with all the kids in the program. Please make sure you call in any absences, early pick ups, or things of that nature. I will not be able to check email as readily or quickly, so if it is urgent it will be very important that you call the office and have them take a message. Thanks for understanding!
Save the date for our Blue Out! April 12th!
