This week started off with Halloween excitement. The first graders were excited to have their parties while the Kindergarteners and second graders could talk about their parties they had on Friday before the parade. The kids were excited to talk about trick-or-treating. We did a final review of expected and unexpected T-or-Ting and the kids laughed when I played "tricks" on them like, "great costume...here's some math homework!" or "hello little boy/girl here is some broccoli!" The laughter was followed by how to truly handle getting yucky candy, healthy food (like apples or other snack foods), or something we are not able to eat because of allergies or special diets. The younger kids worked on their compliance skills by following directions with a color by number. The number recognition was not the focus but doing what is asked and reading directions on our work was. We also practiced situations with small, med, and BIG reactions and problems by sorting cards with situations of problems and reactions. A picture of the "clue" sheets are found below.
The rest of the week was filled with student action plans. We broke up this task into smaller chunks to complete it. The kids reflected whether they thought they have the skills (+) and use them frequently or whether they are not there YET (delta/triangle). This will help drive conferences as we will be talking about the skills to set goals for as well as a home/school plan of action.
The kindergarten/first grade kids watched a "Model Me Kids" video about raising hands. The video shows real kids doing the skills and then like a sports commentator it pauses the screen to show the body parts that are doing the expected behaviors. They took home sheets of the three summarizing parts of the behavior to practice and review with you.
Second grade ended the week with Audrey teaching group. We had talked about how worries accompany or follow problems and sometimes worries even lead to problems. The kids had great insight and made connections. Then Audrey taught the following day to share a book about "what-ifs". She saved $20 in group to pay to be teacher of the group for a day. She did a wonderful job reading and sharing her main points. Included are some pictures. If you have read this entire blog please send a note with your child that lists the secret code: SOCIAL KIDS and they will earn a special prize :)
Have a great weekend!
