Before break we talked more about how a filter is used to block things that should not be said out loud (the marbles). You can see our display which keeps the thoughts above the filter and the speech bubbles which are let through the filter. The kids and I made a list of things that could be said and could not or should not be said and kept in a thought bubble. Kindergarten will keep being exposed to this, as they are still pretty young to be practicing. First graders are not only exposed but are beginning to analyze what they are saying and whether it should be a thought or speech bubble. This concept should continue for years so we are starting the idea of it now. It was cute to see their shocked faces as they wrote more "inappropriate" things that I assured them was OK to think but NOT to say. Behavior typically goes back to this rule I like to teach by, it's not always "no" but "when and where". No picking your nose vs. Go to the bathroom and get a tissue to take care of your nose... When and where and sometimes how...
Another fun part of the week was when Mr. Okuniewski came to read to our class (whole group). He brought one of his favorite books, "The Giving Tree" and even left it for us to enjoy again and again. Mr. Okuniewski is our new Assistant Superintendent. I invited him to visit our classroom (and program). He also read to two of the second grade classes as well (Mrs. Lescoe and Mrs. Kiebel's classes). Pictures are posted below. The kids each made him a thank you card and we sent them in the mail.
Glad everyone is back and healthy! I will post another blog by the weekend for what we did this week!
