This week we talked about levels of touch for each circle. All of the kids caught up on each color and what it represents and then we discussed the type of affection or touch that applied to each level. The breakdown of colors so you can reinforce the same concepts and messages at home and in the community are as follows: Purple-self-calming, self-soothing. We can hug ourselves, take care of our bodies (hygiene), and find strategies that help our bodies feel better if we are upset (squeezes, rubbing arms, getting a drink, etc.). Blue-hugs and kisses for our closest family members we trust. Green-Hugs only and only when they are asked for. Yellow-Handshakes, high fives, and fist bumps. Orange-Just a wave (no touching), Red-NO TOUCHING, NO CONTACT (hands down). We finished up all reading assessments! Whew! More to come! Have a great week!

This week we worked on adding circles to our social detective notebook (which will go home for the summer for review and home practice). We talked about how the orange circle is for community helpers and how we can trust those people to do the service they perform or offer. The police we can trust to do their job. Same with firefighters, bankers, doctors, dentists, etc. Then with the stranger circle (red) we are not talking to them, touching them or going with them for ANY reason. We read the book, "Never Talk to Strangers" and Mrs. Szalay showed a video and talked with the groups about the topic.
We have been painting sheets of paper the colors of the circles to create a book that will go home soon. If you went to the spring fair on Friday I hope you had a great night! In the coming week I will be finishing up reading assessments and we will be finishing Circles. Then the rest of the year groups will have some review of the topics we have covered so we can add to our notebooks. Have a great week! This past week we wrapped up our Mother's Day projects and sent those home. Happy belated Mother's Day to all our great moms. You do so much for your kids and have a lot on your plate. I hope your families recognized you in a special way.
Our kindy went to the Bogie Lake Greenhouse for a special tour and planted a flower for mom! It was a success! The first graders took a visual tour of the zoo to prepare for their trip as well as went over the schedule and rules with Mrs. Wolff and I before the big trip Friday. I hear it went very well! Thank you to those of you who sent pictures. I will put those on our field trip page. In our circles work, we talked about yellow being acquaintances and how these are people we recognize by their face and possibly name, but do not necessarily trust with lots of personal information. They can be other school staff, people we see weekly, but do not know that well personally. We will be diving into orange which is community helpers. Let's make it a great week! Not a huge blog this week. On Monday I was at the START conference with Mrs. Szalay. The kids had Mrs. L who was the previous sub for Mrs. Reece so the kids knew her well. They read "Mama Llama, Home with Mama", a donated book from the Cataldo family. The kids talked about the wonderful things their mamas do for them! This kick started a mother's day sheet the kids completed (some of the answers are so great!). We also started a hand made card that will be coming home this week with a gift for mom. We reviewed the green circle and painted a page for our circles book. Green is for our best friends. They will be people we trust right after our family. These people we see regularly, they know our families and we know theirs, we have been to each others homes, possibly have had sleepovers or small vacations together. Our upper el kids started the MSTEP (so long!) and the 5th graders went to camp! I wrapped up some IEPs for our crew, but may have a few more to attend for PAL, but I will keep you posted. This coming week we will continue our mom gifts and circles. I believe we only have 3 library times left. The second to last one the kids can only check out one book and the last library session will be reading under the stars. For that time, please send your child with a flashlight. In the past, some of our kids are so upset when they don't have one. Lots of events coming up, please check the Hawk Talk and your child's general ed teacher's blog or newsletter for more info specific to the class. This Friday is movie night starting when the sun sets outside. They will be watching Moana! And the spring fair is May 19! So many cool opportunities coming up! :)
